Now open: Chase Sapphire Terrace at Austin's airport

Dec 05, 2023Dec 05, 2023

As of Monday morning, the new Sapphire Terrace is open for visitors at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) in Texas.

However, while it has "Sapphire" in the name, this space is not a traditional Chase Sapphire Lounge. So, what is it, and how is it different from a lounge?

Here's a first look at this indoor-outdoor space at Austin's airport — plus how you can get access.

The new Sapphire Terrace is a combined indoor-outdoor space covering approximately 5,000 square feet, with 80% of that being an outdoor terrace and 20% indoor space.

The entrance is located at the end of the passenger terminal, near Gate 1. Take the stairs or elevator to the upper level, which is the same access point for the Delta Sky Club. The entrance to the Sapphire Terrace is on the left.

This space was previously a publicly accessible terrace for planespotting, facing east. In Austin's hot months (from May to October), the outdoor space will be very warm, especially with the sun beaming down in the morning. Even in the afternoon, when there is indirect sun, it will still be hot outside. This may affect how long you want to stay on the outdoor terrace — as will any inclement weather since the roof isn't fully closed.

Given that the Sapphire Terrace is located at the far end of the terminal, near the Delta Air Lines gates, it's not the most convenient location for those flying on other airlines, particularly American Airlines and United Airlines.

The Sapphire Terrace is not part of Priority Pass. Instead, access is granted exclusively to those holding a Chase Sapphire Reserve or J.P. Morgan Reserve Card (formerly the Chase Palladium Card).

Cardholders get complimentary access to the Sapphire Terrace and can bring two complimentary guests. To get in, show your card at the entrance.

You can only get access on departure (not arrival) and within three hours of your flight's scheduled departure time.

The information for the J.P. Morgan Reserve card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

The terrace opens daily between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. This means that travelers with early-morning flights will not get access to the facility.

Billed as "a place to relax, recharge and fuel up before flights," the Sapphire Terrace leans heavily into Austin's local culture. The complimentary drinks and light bites include cider from Austin Eastciders and beer from (512) Brewing Company.

Another bespoke touch is artwork from local muralist Rex Hamilton adorning the space.

In addition to drinks and grab-and-go food, the space includes unique features like shuffleboard on the terrace and giveaways (while supplies last).

Both the indoor and outdoor spaces include multiple types of seating. Whether you want to hang out as a group or get some work done individually, there are many options. However, we'd imagine that this facility will be popular with Sapphire Reserve cardholders and get busy.

Finally, there is a bathroom just for terrace visitors and it offers free diapers.

Sapphire Reserve cardholders living in or flying out of Austin can access a new space to hang out before their flights. The Sapphire Terrace is now open near Gate 1, offering complimentary grab-and-go snacks, drinks and even games. The best feature for many may be the planespotting, but remember that this is mainly an outdoor space exposed to the elements. Also, the lounge doesn't open until 10 a.m., so plan your visit accordingly.
